BREEDING, JUDGING AND THE FUTURE OF THE SPORT
By E. M. Gilbert Jr.

Charlotte McGowan presented an excellent article on why breeding and judging are compatible.

A major problem facing AKC is the lack of new breeders coupled with the loss of the old time breeder. We in the fancy are the cause of the problem which does not bode well for the future of purebred dogs.

As Dr. Carmen Battaglia has covered in articles on breeding, we called anyone who had over one litter a year a puppy mill. This caused many to drop out, rather than stand up to the criticism and do what was right by their breed.

A second thing we have done is to criticize a person who judges and breeds. So now breeders decide they can contribute to the sport by becoming judges, but can't take the criticism of also breeding. Just as Charlotte McGowan points out in her article “Breeding and Judging” these are the ones who should remain breeders.

So ask yourself where have all the breeders gone? As Pogo stated: "We have met the enemy and it is us."

The next time you see an active breeder and judge thank them for saving the sport. Perception be damned!
