COLD WEATHER CHECK LIST - TRAVELING WITH YOUR DOG(S) TO A SHOW
By Pat Gilbert
(Editor’s note - This list is based on many years experience showing dogs in Canada in the Winter.)
Everything on the traveling with dogs list
Warm water and bucket
Space blanket shiny side in for heat. I also carry extra blankets to bundle the crate with if the temperature drops below freezing. Woolly blankets first then the space blanket. Leave an air hole for oxygen.
Towels for extra warmth. You can pin them on the dogs for extra warmth. The dogs can stand on a dry towel to keep warm.
I carry my cooler ringside with warm things in it. Beef broth and hot packs.
If you have a small dog, do not hesitate to pick it up and hold it against your body under your coat for warmth.
If need be, kneel on a dry towel and wrap your arms around your dog. I carry a dog coat to the ring and when my dog is not being looked at, he wears his coat. The other thing you can do is keep your dog moving. I walk or run back and forth behind the set up line in the show ring.
